The IELTS and TOEFL figures here follow Duolingo’s own published comparison tables, and the CEFR column follows Duolingo’s CEFR alignment. But a converted number is still an approximation — no institution admits you on a DET score “converted” to IELTS. They read your DET score against their own DET minimum.

Duolingo aligns the scale as A1–A2 = 10–55, B1 = 60–95, B2 = 100–125, C1 = 130–150 and C2 = 155–160. Most university requirements fall in the B2–C1 band — the 100–150 stretch of the scale.

Both sit in the DET 100–115 band, which is roughly IELTS 6.0–6.5 and CEFR B2 — the most common undergraduate requirement range.

Neither — they are different scales measuring the same English. A DET 120 and an IELTS 6.5–7.0 describe a similar level; the DET simply reports it on a 10–160 scale rather than a 0–9 one. Comparing the raw numbers directly is meaningless without the concordance.

Because the mapping is approximate and has been revised over time, and some sites use older or rougher tables. The figures here follow Duolingo’s current published comparison. When two sources disagree, the institution’s own stated DET requirement is the only one that decides anything.

Use it to understand roughly where your score sits, not as evidence for an application. Institutions do not accept a “converted” score — they publish a DET minimum and read your actual DET result against it. Check which universities accept the DET and their score ranges.

The scale tops out at 160. DET 155–160 is CEFR C2 and roughly IELTS 8.5–9.0 — above the published requirement essentially everywhere, so there is rarely a reason to chase it.

Working backwards: IELTS 6.5–7.0 is around DET 120–125, and IELTS 7.0 is around DET 130. If your program states its requirement in IELTS terms, aim for the DET band that covers it, plus a margin for a below-average day.

No. Converting a DET score does not produce an IELTS result — only sitting IELTS does. If a program accepts only IELTS, you need to take IELTS; if it accepts the DET, send your DET score directly and skip the conversion entirely.

Accurate enough to tell you roughly which band you are in, and no more. Both tests report in coarse steps for a reason, and mapping one onto the other adds a second layer of approximation. Trust it for orientation; distrust it for any decision that hinges on a single half-band.

DET 100 is the bottom of the B2 band on the CEFR, and roughly IELTS 6.0. It is around the entry point for many undergraduate programs, though plenty ask for a little more.

A Duolingo English Test score of 140 is roughly IELTS 7.5, about TOEFL iBT 106–116, and CEFR C1, following Duolingo’s published comparison tables. It sits in the band where highly selective postgraduate programmes set their bar, so a 140 clears the English requirement at almost every university — but always check the exact DET minimum your programme publishes.

C1. Duolingo’s official CEFR alignment places every score from 130 to 150 at C1 (advanced), so DET 140 is solidly C1 — not B2, as some sources state. B2 covers 100–125 and C2 starts at 155. C1 means you can use English flexibly for academic and professional purposes, which is why scores of 130 and above meet most competitive requirements.

DET 125 is roughly IELTS 6.5–7.0, about TOEFL iBT 84–93, and CEFR B2 — the very top of the B2 band. It meets competitive undergraduate requirements and many taught master’s programmes. Five more points reaches DET 130, which Duolingo aligns with C1 and around IELTS 7.0, a common threshold for selective postgraduate entry.

DET 115 falls in the 100–115 band, which is roughly IELTS 6.0–6.5, about TOEFL iBT 60–83, and CEFR B2. That is the most common undergraduate requirement range, so a 115 clears many admissions bars. If your programme asks for IELTS 6.5 specifically, aim for DET 120 so you sit comfortably above it rather than on the edge.

DET 150 is roughly IELTS 8.0, about TOEFL iBT 117–118, and CEFR C1 — the top of the C1 band on Duolingo’s alignment. It is at or above what almost every institution asks for, including the most selective programmes. C2 begins at DET 155, which corresponds to roughly IELTS 8.5–9.0 on Duolingo’s comparison.

DET 90–95 is roughly IELTS 5.5, about TOEFL iBT 46–59, and CEFR B1. That meets many community-college and some pathway or foundation programmes, but most undergraduate degrees ask for DET 100 or more, which is B2. If you are at 90–95, targeted work on your weakest subscore is usually the fastest route to 100.
