But a converted number is still an approximation — no institution admits you on a DET score “converted” to IELTS. They read your DET score against their own DET minimum.

Duolingo aligns the scale as A1–A2 = 10–55, B1 = 60–95, B2 = 100–125, C1 = 130–150 and C2 = 155–160. Most university requirements fall in the B2–C1 band — the 100–150 stretch of the scale.

Both sit in the DET 100–115 band, which is roughly IELTS 6.0–6.5 and CEFR B2 — the most common undergraduate requirement range.

Neither — they are different scales measuring the same English. A DET 120 and an IELTS 6.5–7.0 describe a similar level; the DET simply reports it on a 10–160 scale rather than a 0–9 one. Comparing the raw numbers directly is meaningless without the concordance.

Because the mapping is approximate and has been revised over time, and some sites use older or rougher tables. The figures here follow Duolingo’s current published comparison. When two sources disagree, the institution’s own stated DET requirement is the only one that decides anything.

Use it to understand roughly where your score sits, not as evidence for an application. Institutions do not accept a “converted” score — they publish a DET minimum and read your actual DET result against it. Check which universities accept the DET and their score ranges.

The scale tops out at 160. DET 155–160 is CEFR C2 and roughly IELTS 8.5–9.0 — above the published requirement essentially everywhere, so there is rarely a reason to chase it.

Working backwards: IELTS 6.5–7.0 is around DET 120–125, and IELTS 7.0 is around DET 130. If your program states its requirement in IELTS terms, aim for the DET band that covers it, plus a margin for a below-average day.

No. Converting a DET score does not produce an IELTS result — only sitting IELTS does. If a program accepts only IELTS, you need to take IELTS; if it accepts the DET, send your DET score directly and skip the conversion entirely.

Accurate enough to tell you roughly which band you are in, and no more. Both tests report in coarse steps for a reason, and mapping one onto the other adds a second layer of approximation. Trust it for orientation; distrust it for any decision that hinges on a single half-band.
