DET Mock Test 1
A complete sitting in the real order, all eight sections. Questions run from easy to hard across the whole range, so wherever you are now, this one finds it.
- About an hour, eight sections, run in the real order
- All 13 question types — nothing here appears in the other six tests
- Eight subscores and per-answer feedback the moment you finish
Mock Test 1 is a full sitting, not a sample. It opens with a short start screen — no camera, no permission prompts — then runs the eight sections in the order Duolingo runs them and ends with a scored report. Budget an uninterrupted hour, and have a microphone ready for the speaking section, where your browser asks for it.
Free for a limited time. No card, and no account needed to take it or to see your score.
What Mock Test 1 is built from
Eight sections, in the order you will meet them on the day. Everything in the right-hand column belongs to Mock Test 1 alone — none of it appears in the other six tests — and where a section draws from a pool, the engine picks what suits the level you are working at, so two people taking this test will not meet exactly the same items, or even the same number of them.
| Section | Task types | In Mock Test 1 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Read & Select | Read & Select | 15–18 of its 67 real and invented words, 5 seconds each |
| 2 · Fill in the Blanks | Fill in the Blanks | 6–9 of its 21 sentences |
| 3 · Mixed Language Skills | Listen & Type, Read & Complete | 9–15 items in 24 minutes, from its 19 passages and 29 audio clips |
| 4 · Interactive Reading | Interactive Reading | Two of: The library that lends tools; A school garden feeds the kitchen; Swimming in the harbour; The street as public space — five steps each |
| 5 · Interactive Listening | Interactive Listening | Two of these conversations: You are reporting a lost bag at a railway station office. You are speaking with a shop assistant about a laptop that has stopped working. You stop by the library help desk to ask about a book you reserved and a fine on your account. You speak to a colleague about covering a team meeting while you are away at a training course. You visit the leisure centre reception to ask about joining the swimming pool. You are speaking with a landlord about a problem in your flat. |
| 6 · Writing | Write About the Photo, Writing Sample | Four written responses, two of them about photographs from this test’s three: A market stall piled high; A snow-covered mountain range at night; Three young men laughing together over a laptop at a table |
| 7 · Speaking | Speak About the Photo, Interactive Speaking | The remaining photograph, described aloud, then a spoken conversation |
| 8 · Writing & Speaking Sample | Writing Sample, Speaking Sample | 8 minutes on open prompts |
When to take Mock Test 1
Take it first before you change anything about how you prepare. Its report is your baseline: the overall, the eight subscores, and the three leaks worth fixing first. Everything you practise next should aim at what this sitting finds.
That order is a suggestion, not a requirement: the seven tests are equated — a score means the same on each — so any of them can come first. What matters is leaving enough work between sittings for the next score to mean something.
What to bring, and what you get
Bring an unaided hour and finish every task. You leave with a predicted overall and all eight subscores — see the sample report — and the mock tests page covers getting a number worth trusting. The official test costs $70 USD; find your weak spots before you pay for it.
