Why is it free?
Because the scoring engine gets better with data. Every test taken helps us calibrate it, and while that is happening it would be wrong to charge as though it were finished.
We will introduce paid tiers later. Anything you have taken while it was free stays free.
What this does not include
The official Duolingo English Test itself, which costs $70 USD and is booked directly through Duolingo. We are a practice platform and we do not sell the official test or influence your official result in any way.
Free, and what that does and does not cover
Every full mock test and every section test is free right now, with no card and no account required. That includes the parts that actually cost us money to run: writing and speaking responses are graded by a language model, and speech is transcribed before grading, so a single full test costs real money in API calls on our side.
We are running it free because a scoring engine is only as good as the data telling us where it is wrong. People using it and reporting scores that looked off is worth more to us right now than revenue.

If that changes
For context on what the official test costs: the Duolingo English Test itself is $70 USD, results arrive in 2 days, and Duolingo limits purchases to three tests in any 30-day period. Practising here is free; sitting the real thing is not, which is the main argument for not walking into it cold. How that compares with IELTS and TOEFL.
Questions about pricing
Is there a limit on how many tests I can take?
No per-person cap at the moment — you can work through the mocks and sections as often as the item bank allows without repeating questions. Each test does cost us real money to grade, so if that ever forces a limit it will be announced here; the official test, by contrast, caps you at three purchases in any 30-day period.
Do I pay you or Duolingo for the real test?
Duolingo, and only Duolingo — the official test is $70 USD and bought from them directly. We are independent, not affiliated with Duolingo, and free; nothing you do here is the real test or produces an official score.
Can I support the site if it has helped me?
There is no tip jar or donation button, and we would rather not add one. The support that actually helps is telling us where the engine scored you wrong — a calibration note from a real test-taker is worth more than money while we are still tuning it.
Is this really free?
Yes. All three full mock tests, all four section tests, AI-graded writing and speaking, and every task guide. No card, no trial countdown, no feature held back.
Do I need an account?
No. You can take any test without signing in. An account exists so your history persists and so the engine can avoid repeating questions between sittings.
What does it cost you to run?
Real money per test — writing and speaking responses are graded by a language model, and speech is transcribed first. That is the honest reason this page exists rather than a simple "it is free" line.
Will you start charging?
Possibly, and if so it will be announced here before it happens. Tests you have already taken stay yours.
Is there a paid tier with better scoring?
No. There is one engine and everybody gets it. We are not holding back accuracy as an upsell.
How much does the real Duolingo English Test cost?
$70 USD, with results in 2 days. Duolingo limits purchases to three tests in any 30-day period, so a wasted attempt is expensive in both money and time.
Is the DET cheaper than IELTS or TOEFL?
Generally yes, and the gap widens if you sit more than once. It also needs no test-centre booking. Full comparison.
Do you sell my data?
No. Audio is never stored — it is transcribed and discarded. Your attempts are scoped to your account. Privacy policy.
Are there ads?
None, and none planned. An ad-funded test-prep site has an incentive to keep you clicking rather than to get you a score, which is the wrong incentive.
Can institutions or teachers use this with a class?
Nothing stops you, and several already do. Tell us what you need — group progress tracking is the most requested thing we have not built.
Do you offer refunds?
There is nothing to refund. If that ever changes, a refund policy will be published here at the same time.
What is the catch?
That the scores are estimates from our engine, not official results, and carry no standing with any institution. That is stated on every report and it is the honest limit of what a practice platform can give you.
