Cost and speed: the DET's case

The Duolingo English Test costs about a fifth of the US IELTS fee and takes about a third of the time. You sit it at home whenever you like, and your certified result arrives within 2 days — where IELTS means booking a centre, travelling to it, and waiting up to two weeks. The examiner question: IELTS's case

IELTS scores your speaking with a trained human examiner in a live conversation. The DET records your speech and scores it automatically. Neither is "better" in the abstract, but they suit different people: if you freeze in front of a person, the DET's private recording is easier; if you speak more naturally in a real conversation than into a microphone, IELTS plays to that. It is worth knowing which one you are before you pay.

Acceptance: the deciding factor

This is the one that actually decides it. Thousands of institutions accept the Duolingo English Test — but not all of them, and not always for every programme or visa route. IELTS has a longer history and slightly broader acceptance, especially for immigration.

Before anything else, check your specific programme's requirements. If your university lists a DET score requirement, the DET is almost always the faster, cheaper choice. Scores: how they line up

The two use different scales — the DET runs 10 to 160, in increments of 5, IELTS runs 0–9 bands — but both anchor to the CEFR, so they can be compared. As a rough guide:

These are approximate. Universities set their own equivalences, so a programme asking for IELTS 6.5 might list a DET requirement of 105, 110 or 115 — always use the number your specific institution publishes.

Difficulty: are they equally hard?

They test the same language, so a strong English user scores well on both. What differs is the shape of the difficulty. The DET is adaptive — it hunts for your level and packs many short, varied question types into an hour, which rewards quick task-switching. IELTS is longer and more predictable, with familiar essay and interview formats, which rewards stamina and preparation. If you have practised IELTS essays for months, that preparation does not fully transfer; the DET's formats are their own thing and need their own practice.

So which should you take?

• Take the DET if: your programme accepts it, you want a result fast and cheap, and you are comfortable speaking into a microphone at home.
• Take IELTS if: your programme or visa only accepts IELTS, or you strongly prefer a live examiner.
